Dear Shipmates,

Many of us who were ported in Norfolk, have not been back since leaving the Haynsworth or the Navy.  I'm pleased to report that the Norfolk we all knew is not the Norfolk of today.  The city has been dramatically transformed.  Come to this year's Reunion and be completely surprised.

The Radisson Hotel will accommodate this year's reunion with room rates of $75.00 per day.  This rate is also available three days prior, as well as three days following our reunion.  I reserve a block of rooms for the” early birds” who wish to show up prior to Thursday, October the fifth. For those that come early, IF we muster up at least 35 persons interested, we will tour Colonial Williamsburg on Thursday October the fifth, leaving at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 4:30 pm, ready enough to meet those registering that evening.

Colonial Williamsburg is a completely restore and city, which is the birthplace Of Our American Revolution.  See the colonies Capitol Building, as It was in the 18th century along with The Governor's Palace where Britain's Governor to the colonies resided, plus much more of our history.  See where our founding fathers discussed the unfair taxation, which prompted the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence, much to the peril of all the signatories.

Friday October, the 6th   We will have a riding tour of Norfolk and learn about its 350 year history.  We will view the stately homes along the Hague, old St. Paul's Church, the Moses Myer's house, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the historic Freemason District, the restored waterfront area, and many other points of interest.  Remember, Main and Granby streets?

The tour will end with a memorial service aboard the USS Wisconsin, BB-64, for a recently departed(and past) shipmates. This will be a wreath laying ceremony on the fantail.

A historical note: the USS Haynsworth was one of the escort ships that accompanied the Wisconsin through the Panamá Canal and into the war in the Pacific.

From there we will explore the adjacent NAUTICUS/Hampton Roads Naval Museum, followed by a luncheon on the ship “SPIRT of Norfolk” and a cruise on Elizabeth River to the Norfolk Naval Station in return.

Then we will visit the MacArthur Memorial, which houses an outstanding collection of artifacts, documents, photographs and memorabilia from the General's life.  The Pacific war period is especially interesting.  Both the General and his wife are interned there. After the MacArthur Memorial visit.  We were headed to Newport News for a dinner/show entitled “Liberty Call, Liberty Call” at the historic Boxwood Inn.  Our busy day will end at 9:00 pm back at the hotel.

Saturday, October 7th   From 9:00am to 1:00pm , we will visit the Norfolk Naval Station. (Plans are not yet firm on a combat ship tour, hopefully, a destroyer). After the tour, we will have lunch at Breezy Point Officers Club. We will return to the Radisson, where we will hold our Annual Business Meeting from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.

At eight o'clock, we will have on our Reunion Banquet in a beautiful New Orleans Room.

Sunday, October 8th   Our Farewell Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to NLT 11 a.m.

More Reunion information will be posted on our web site, as well as the May issue of the newsletter along with the Registration Form.

Hope to see ALL of you there for another great USS Haynsworth Reunion.

Best Regards,

REUNION CHAIRMAN
